In June 2021, the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League named Tom McEvay to the position of Director of Education Services.

Tom is a retired high school principal from Port Alberni, B.C. who has been working with university and college-bound student athletes for nearly 20 years and helped hundreds of junior hockey players move on to the NCAA, USports, ACAC, ACHA and BCIHL. During that time he has served as the Education Director for the BCHL’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Coquitlam Express and Nanaimo Clippers, as well as the CSSHL’s West Van Hockey Academy.

In his role with the KIJHL, Tom works with the league’s 20 teams to provide resources for our players, including:

  • Assisting with education planning and secondary school transcript review
  • Understanding university and college academic entrance requirements
  • Navigating the differences between different college hockey leagues and levels
  • Helping student athletes self-market themselves to college hockey coaches
  • Hosting a series of online webinars on a variety of education and sport- related topics
  • Evaluating the financial costs associated with playing college hockey
  • Training KIJHL team-based education advisors to work with individual athletes
