Young Guns: Sam Giangualano

Sam Giangualano of the Merritt Centennials earned this week’s Young Guns selection with four goals and four assists in three games.

Centennials head coach-assistant general manager Wes McLeod said Giangualano played “a really good brand of two-way hockey.”

“If you go back and look at some of the goals that he and his line produced, it was transitions or defensive plays that led to offence,” said McLeod. “I think for Sam, they did a great job in taking care of their own end and focusing on details away from the offensive zone that led to those chances.”

Among Giangualano’s four goals was a great shot for the winner against the Grand Forks Border Bruins when he beat Matthew Dovichak over his blocker shoulder.

McLeod added that Giangualano has “ice in his veins” as the moment isn’t too big for him. The 5-9, 158-pound forward is a very mature 18-year-old.

“He’s very steady in his emotions and doesn’t really get up and down too much within the game, which I think helps him in those moments,” said McLeod.
