Wranglers’ Ethan Sanders receives Grant Sheridan Scholarship

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and the MindRight for Athletes Society are pleased to announce that 100 Mile House Wranglers captain Ethan Sanders has been named the recipient of the Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship.

Each year, the MindRight for Athletes Society awards the $1,500 scholarship, named in memory of the longtime Kelowna Chiefs owner and general manager, to one exceptional KIJHL student-athlete.

“I would like to congratulate Ethan Sanders on being the recipient of the 2023 Remember Grant Sheridan Scholarship. Ethan demonstrates great leadership attributes by being the captain of the 100-Mile House Wranglers, volunteering in the community and graduating high school with a strong GPA. I believe Ethan is a great role model for his community and I wish him the best in his post-secondary endeavors while attending Arizona State University.”

The scholarship will assist Sanders, who joined the Wranglers from the Thompson Blazers U18AAA program, with his studies in Sports Management while playing hockey for the Sun Devils in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 1.

“It was pretty shocking and awesome,” said Sanders of receiving the Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship. “It means quite a lot and speaks to me on and off the ice as a person and a player. It’s going to help a lot to have a little bit of extra money for school.”

Sanders helped in the community by visiting elementary schools weekly to spend time with 5-11-year-olds, helping them with their reading and writing. He also visited the friendship centre monthly to speak with people and helped with the First Shift Program teaching kids skating fundamentals and how to handle a puck. He also assisted at a local grocery store bagging groceries and bringing them to people’s vehicles.

“It is very important to do things in the community because the community does so much for the Wranglers. They have always supported us,” said Sanders. “It shows them that we care about their support and we want to give it back. The fans are awesome and they are the team. To be able to give back and interact with people and share smiles with them is amazing.”

Sanders graduated from NorKam Secondary School in Kamloops, B.C. in July 2021 where he earned above 90 per cent in his studies. Sanders, 19, is pursuing Sports Management as he’s interested in becoming an agent and assisting players get to the next level.

Sanders is the fourth recipient of the Remembering Grant Sheridan Scholarship, joining Nathan Hannon (Osoyoos Coyotes) in 2022, Josh Wiens (Castlegar Rebels) in 2021 and Angus Amadio (Beaver Valley Nitehawks) in 2020.
