The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s (KIJHL) newest expansion team in Summerland is set to take flight next season as the Jets.
The Summerland Junior Hockey Society has announced that its members have selected the Jets name as the run(a)way winner from a number of options suggested by fans, aligning the team’s identity with that of the Summerland Minor Hockey Association. An overwhelmingly positive response from community members made it apparent that the Jets name was cleared for take-off.
“As a community-based team, we felt that it was very important to follow what our community wants,” says Summerland Junior Hockey Society chairperson Terry Rolston. “Summerland Minor Hockey teams have been known as the Jets since the early 1980’s so it is our honour to follow in their footsteps and continue the Summerland Jets legacy!”
“I’m thrilled to officially welcome the Summerland Jets to the KIJHL for the 2026-27 hockey season,” says KIJHL commissioner Jeff Dubois. “It’s tremendous to see the connections that are already being established between the organization and community, and adopting the Jets branding is just another example of that.”
With the team name and logo now determined, the Jets will turn their attention to putting together their coaching staff and roster. The hiring of a Head Coach and General Manager is up first, with that individual then preparing for the team’s inaugural spring camp running from May 1-3 at Summerland Arena.
