Nelson Leafs assistant captain Simon Nemethy will continue his hockey career with the Okanagan Lakers of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.
The Vanderhoof native is excited to keep playing while he studies business at Okanagan College in Kelowna. The Lakers program was a good fit for him because they have the courses he was looking for and he feels the hockey program looks promising.
“It looks like it’s going to be a bright future for the new team that they have there,” said Nemethy, who put up 100 points in 131 career Kootenay International Junior Hockey League games split between the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Leafs. “I think it will be exciting living and playing there.”
Nemethy is coming off a season in which he put up 32 points in 42 games, then followed that up with nine goals and 18 points in 21 Teck Cup playoff games. The Leafs lost in five games in the Teck Cup championship to the Revelstoke Grizzlies.
“I thought I had a good year. It was a really fun year,” he said. “The team was great, the coaches were great. It was obviously a good run in the playoffs. It was a really good year.”
During the season, the 6-1, 175-pound centre saw improvement in his skills, but he was focused on puck movement and puck skills. Nemethy was very happy with the growth in his game.
“I like to make plays, throw the body around,” said Nemethy.
