Devon Barclay of the Nelson Leafs has committed to play for the Okanagan Lakers in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League next fall.
“I am excited to commit to the Okanagan Lakers to continue my hockey and academic career,” said Barclay, a Grande Prairie, Alta., native. “I’d like to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone else who helped me. I am looking forward to what’s ahead.”
Barclay had 11 points (2-9) in 38 games for the Leafs. In 113 career regular season games with the Leafs and Sicamous Eagles, Barclay had 58 points (18-40). In his rookie season with the Eagles in 2023/24 Barclay produced 28 points (5-23) in 37 games.
This past season Barclay improved his skating, puck skills and shooting ability.
“My time with the organization helped me develop valuable leadership skills and build strong relationships with others,” he said. “I improved tremendously with Nelson, which helped me gain the knowledge and experience for this next opportunity.”
The 6-4, 200-pound forward also played in 10 KIJHL Teck Cup playoff games with the Leafs and Eagles and had two points. Barclay is the ninth KIJHL player recruited by the Lakers this spring.
“The Nelson Leafs are beyond happy to see Devon continue his hockey career and start his higher education with the Lakers,” said head coach-general manager Gianni Mangone. “The past two years has been a pleasure coaching Devon and we are excited to see what he does in the future. Personally, he was the first trade I made so to see him continue his career and get an education with it is a very proud and special moment. We wish him all the best.”
