Instat KIJHL 3 Stars of the Month: March

Simon Nemethy and Bryce Sookro of the Nelson Leafs, as well as Brandon Weare of the Revelstoke Grizzlies have been selected as the Instat Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Month for March.

Nemethy – Top Forward – Nemethy scored eight goals and added eight assists for 16 points in 17 games, as he helped the Leafs defeat the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Kimberley Dynamiters to reach the KIJHL Teck Cup championship, losing to the Revelstoke Grizzlies in five games. In the six-game series against the Nitehawks, Nemethy had three goals, including a game-winner, and four assists for seven points. He enjoyed a four-point night on March 7. In their six-game series against the Dynamiters, Nemethy had a goal and three points. Against the Grizzlies, the six-foot, 175-pound forward, who has committed to the Okanagan Lakers in the B.C. IHL, had six points, including a pair of two-goal efforts.

Sookro – Top Defenceman – Sookro had five goals and 12 assists for 17 points in 15 games. The 6-1, 200-pound blueliner had two goals and five points in four games against the Nitehawks. Against the Dynamiters, he had two goals, including a winner, and seven points in six games. And during the Teck Cup championship against the Grizzlies, Sookro had a goal and four assists for five points in five games. 

Weare – Top Goalie – Weare was named the Teck Cup championship MVP after helping lead the Grizzlies to back-to-back league championships. Weare had 11 wins in the month with a .948 SP (455 saves on 480 shots) and a 1.57 GAA. On March 11, he earned a 22-save shutout against the Kamloops Storm. He had four games in which he faced more than 35 shots, beginning on March 18 when he stopped 39 of 40 against the Osoyoos Coyotes. Then on March 19, he stopped 39 of 41 shots. On March 25 against the Leafs, Weare made 50 saves on 53 shots. And on March 29, the Game 4 that went to triple OT, Weare stopped 49 of 52 shots.
