Fernie Ghostriders alumnus Ethan MacDuff has become a captain for the second time in his hockey career.

The Lloydminster, Alta., native is entering his third season with the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 3 program named MacDuff one of two captains for the 2025-26 season.

“It means a lot to me that I have been chosen to help lead this team with my fellow captain Cole Brennan,” said MacDuff, who scored four goals and had two assists while playing in 24 of 25 games last season. “Our whole leadership group works very well together. We know what this team can do and I’m honoured to be trusted with helping steer us in the right direction.”

The last time MacDuff captained a team was with his hometown Lloydminster Blazers U18AA midget team before joining the Ghostriders. MacDuff wore an A with the Ghostriders.

“I was able to learn a lot from previous captains of the Ghostriders – Sawan Gill my rookie year, followed by Kyle Klein and Scott Sinclair,” said MacDuff. “I was also given assistant captaincy my second year in Fernie, so from taking in what I saw from those guys and adding it to my own experience, I was able to understand what being a leader means. I’m grateful for my family as well as all my coaches and teammates for helping along.”

An Electrical Engineering major, MacDuff was recently named to the NEHC All-Academic Team and is a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete. In June, he was among four Huskies to earn 2024-2025 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honours. To be eligible, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Skaters must have competed in 90 percent or started in 66 percent of their institution’s games.

MacDuff has played in 46 career games and has 18 points on nine goals and nine assists.
