Alex Dunnett and Everett Boutcher took first aid training while members of the Sicamous Eagles.

Their training was tested during the Eagles poker tournament this past summer when a participant had a medical issue that caused him to go unconscious. With the help of two others, Dunnett and Boutcher assisted with CPR until the ambulance arrived.

“It was a very scary situation, but the gentleman survived,” said Eagles president Sheila Devost.

Last Saturday BC Ambulance recognized the four individuals during a ceremony that included the survivor.

“We’re really proud of them,” said Devost. “It really speaks to the caliber of young people going through our program. We’re thrilled we provided that training and that they used it to help someone.”

Devost added it’s fantastic that BC Ambulance recognizes individuals for stepping up to save a life.

In partnership with B.C. Ambulance, the Eagles offer first aid training to players when it’s available.

“We think it’s really important — especially since our players live in the community, in dorms, with stoves, propane, and other safety considerations,” she said. “We also regularly bring in the fire department, police, and other services to ensure players know safety practices.”
