2022 Cyclone Taylor Cup Preview

Today the KIJHL Teck Cup champion Revelstoke Grizzlies begin their quest for back-to-back Cyclone Taylor Cup championships. The Grizzlies are joined by the Langley Trappers (Pacific Junior Hockey League champs), Peninsula Panthers (Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League champs) and the host Delta Ice Hawks.

The Trappers captured the PJHL title with series wins over Mission City Outlaws (4-1), Ridge Meadows Flames (4-0) and the White Rock Whalers (4-1). Lleyton Shearon led the Trappers with 19 points in 14 games. In goal, Taje Gill won 10 of 11 games with a 1.54 GAA and a .946 SP.

The host Ice Hawks defeated the Richmond Sockeyes (4-3) in the first round, then were eliminated by the Whalers (4-2). Connor Merriman led the Ice Hawks with 10 goals and 19 points in 13 games. Merik Erickson won four of seven games, while Braedy Euerby won two of seven games.

The Panthers won the VIJHL championship defeating the Westshore Wolves (4-2), Kerry Park Islanders (4-2) and the Oceanside Generals (4-2). Riley Braun led the team with 36 points in 18 games. Ashton Lukan, who played for the Princeton Posse in the KIJHL last season, had eight wins with a .902 SP and a 3.11 GAA, while Brad Kelly had four wins with a .937 SP and a 1.80 GAA.

Grizzlies Head Coach and GM Ryan Parent said it has been a whirlwind getting ready. They were able to get on the ice at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

“Just getting a feel for the rink the day before adds to the whole preparation process,” he said. “In retrospect, we did not get to do that in Campbell River so we have had a bit more time here to prepare.

“It’s funny, every rink has its own life to it,” continued Parent, when talking about any potential funny bounces from the boards in the arena. “I definitely think that there are some differences between this rink and other rinks so it was neat to see that yesterday. I’m sure we don’t know everything about it.”

The Grizzlies have also watched game video on the teams to see how they play and their tendencies.

“Jiri Novak looks after most of our video, and he is very detailed and thorough,” said Parent of the work done by their assistant coach. “We have a good breakdown on each team. It is a little bit of different hockey here on the coast than what we are used to.”
